When I finally accepted that fact that God was calling me to be a religious sister, I packed my bags and left Ireland to join the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady. My first stop was in England to our Novitiate and later to Scotland, France and then to Louisiana. Along the way I earned BSN, and later a Master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame.
I have been blessed to share my gifts as a nurse, and especially rewarding was my ability, with the help of others, to found the Immunological Support Department at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center.
The Sisters at one point elected me to be the Provincial of the North American Province. This opportunity opened new doors for me to serve the Sisters, as well as dealing with the ever-changing healthcare environment. It was great working with the many talented and caring people in our Healthcare System.
My favorite bible verse is Psalm 23, from which I have drawn much strength. Today life is a bit quieter and I have more time to go on an inner journey. God is always at my side, and I have more time to pray for myself and others. I thank God for the journey he invited me to take. With the support of my Sisters I hope to continue this path for many more years.
